New Project Announcement: Ten Years Gone

The Stairway Project is pleased to announce the beginning of a new Zeppelin cover project: Ten Years Gone. Almost always in any Zeppelin top ten list, Ten Years Gone is usually found somewhere in the top three for most guitar players and Zeppelin fans. It’s a special song for sure that comes from Jimmy’s infamous kitchen demo’s, and was later reworked and assembled in the studio with great care before the vocals were laid down. Featuring up to 7 or 8 simultaneous guitars at any given time, Ten Years Gone is a masterclass of guitar tones and textures with Jimmy Page’s studio wizardry and production chops on full display. Currently the song is being sketched out in the DAW and scratch tracks are being recorded while I work out each parts one by one.  There’s a lot that goes into these covers including and very intense deep dive into the arrangement and production and it’s through this sketching in the DAW that everything gets uncovered. I’m hoping to find Michelle again for vocals but I really want to get these tracks nice & solid before we approach her.

Since recording the Original Stairway Project, my playing ability has continued to slowly recover. You may recall when I started Stairway I couldn’t even fret the open chord figures (such was the state of nerve damaged my hands). Cutting almost 100% of the sugar out of my diet over the last two years has helped with the nerve inflammation and a lot of my manual dexterity is returning. It wont ever be what it was when I was pursuing a musical career but I hoping to keep pushing through the pain and numbness to move the ceiling up! As long as it’s going up I can be happy.

I’ll be updating the site and posting some in-progress stuff as we go. The site name will remain as The Stairway Project, but we will be opening up the content to feature more general & interesting Zeppelin stuff, and Ten Years Gone Project features. We will also continue to feature images from some of our friends found on Flickr who have posted there with very generous open licensing (usually Creative Commons).
